Most people think they will live in their own home forever. However, those who move to a retirement community generally experience a significant life event (loss of a spouse, house becomes too much, health crisis) that has changed their plans. An important consideration is whether or not the community that you choose for your loved one or yourself will be able to meet future health needs. Through our own Laureate Group communities and our partners you’ll find a continuum of care to address changing or evolving needs.

Here are some basic descriptions of the different options available:

INDEPENDENT LIVING

Independent Living is a residential living setting (apartment, condo) for older adults. Depending upon the community, additional services (housekeeping, laundry, dining, transportation, etc.) may or may not be available. Under this living arrangement, the older adult leads an independent lifestyle that requires minimal or no extra assistance.

At a Laureate Group community, Independent Living offers a choice of studio, one and two bedroom apartments with flexible dining options, as well as optional housekeeping and laundry service. Independent Living includes:

  • 24-hour staffing for emergency response; emergency help call systems in the apartments

  • An extensive activities program as well as Life Long Learning opportunities

  • Scheduled transportation to shopping and outings

  • Access to on-site services - such as banking, hair salon, chapel, exercise room, and on-line computer access

  • Access to wellness clinic - including services provided by outside health professionals (podiatrist, medical director visits, and other health professionals)

What are the benefits of Independent Living in a retirement community?

  • Worry-free lifestyle - no home maintenance and upkeep; easy living services available for household chores

  • Recreational activities and socialization

  • Freedom to do what you like and come and go as you please

  • Emergency help call systems provide peace of mind

ASSISTED LIVING

Assisted Living is a special combination of housing and personalized care services for those who need help with activities of daily living. Assisted Living is different from a nursing home where you will find 24-hour skilled nursing care. Today, most of the cares which historically could only be done in a nursing home can now be accomplished in Assisted Living – at a lower cost.

Assisted Living residences can range from a high-rise apartment complex to a family residence to a converted hotel. Residences may be free standing or housed with other residential options, such as Independent Living or nursing care. Units may vary in size from one room to a full apartment. The levels of care provided will vary from place to place.

At a Laureate Group community, individuals have a choice of studio, one and two bedroom private apartments with full kitchen and bath. An important difference in providing quality care is that Laureate Group Assisted Living communities have a full-time RN on staff and always on call. Under the direction of our medical director, the RN oversees the well-being of those in our Assisted Living program. Services include:

  • Medication management

  • Assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting & walking

  • Access to health and medical services

  • 24-hour staffing for emergency response

  • Emergency help call systems in each apartment

  • Housekeeping and laundry services

  • Scheduled transportation

  • Meals

  • Social and recreational activities

  • No endowment fee

DEMENTIA CARE

Individuals who are in early to mid stage Alzheimer's or dementia can benefit from specialized living arrangements and programs to maximize their quality of life. In addition to a room and meals in a common dining area, these specialty units provide supervision, formal nursing care plans, help with activities of daily living and personalized care designed to offer individuals as much mental and memory stimulation as possible.

Laureate Group's specialized care for people with dementia combines a private suite with its own bathroom and shower. In addition, you’ll see bright, spacious centrally located dining rooms and living areas -- a homey atmosphere. For persons who walk a lot, extra-wide halls and open areas provide the environment to do so.

Specialized programming is designed to reflect individual interests and capabilities. Reminiscence groups and other life review programs, sensory programs, exercise, music, arts and crafts, and games are just some of the programs you’ll find. Residents are encouraged to take part in familiar life long activities such as helping to set the table for dinner, all of which add to the warm community atmosphere. Our seniors also enjoy enclosed, outside recreation areas in spring, summer and autumn.

Family members are encouraged to participate in the many educational programs and activities, including family support groups. They are also invited to fill special memory boxes with familiar items such as family photos or treasured mementos that represent special times.

The kind of environment offered at Laureate Group’s special communities can enhance the quality of life for an individual with dementia. Caring staff specially trained in dementia care, 24-hour staffing and the protective environment provide families with the peace of mind that their loved one is receiving the best care possible.

NURSING HOMES

Nursing Homes are designed to provide 24-hour skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to people with chronic illnesses, injuries or functional disabilities.

The Laureate Group, through our network of care provider partnerships, will assist you in finding a skilled care facility that best fits your families needs.
